Gardening,its in the Container!

       Container gardening is so versatile, you can move your containers around to create different moods and if your flowers fade just change the plants to ones that are flowering or about to flower, its so easy to have a continuous flowering flower pots all season long. Now my one rule for myself is I like all my pots to match, not necessarily in size or shape but in color at least if their near each other. Thats just me and we know I'm a little strange.
       Do you know you can plant bulbs in containers? Yep if you live some where, where you can't have a garden plot they can be put in pots, or if you want some spring time in your home before it's spring time just put your bulbs in the freezer(well protected) and then take them out and plant them.
         Any plant that you would normally grow in your garden you can plant in pots, as long as the pot big enough. I've never done potato's but my brother has with great results. One way I've done this is with 5 gallon buckets (yes I spray painted them to look nicer). Tomato plants do well this way and put some packing peanuts on bottom to make it a little lighter. This way if you live where it's really hot you can move them into partial shade during the hottest part of the day, remember container plants need more watering than in ground plants do. Oh I also put my mint in containers than 'plant' the container in the garden to keep it from spreading and taking over everything, you can do this with any plant that likes to spread itself around.

Garden Planning, it's time to start.

    I know, I know you think it's to soon to start thinking about your gardens now. For those of you across the sea I realize your enjoying the warmth of summer, but your fall will be here before you know it and here in the states where I live it's cold outside, but spring will be here soon too. And planning takes time especially if this is your first garden. Start small you can always add on later. For those whom fall is around the corner you need to be thinking about what kinds of flower bulbs you would like to plant and there are some seeds that need to go though the cold winter in order to come up next spring. Not only bulbs are planted in the fall, for instance, Peony's roots should be planted in the fall since they need the cold of winter to come up in spring.

   It seems early for us that are in the throws of winter, but seed catalogs come out the first of February and then if your planing on ordering seeds it can take up to three weeks to arrive, and I'm assuming you'll start your seeds indoors like I do, that takes time also. Its easy to do and I'll share my secrets with you later.

          I just wanted to touch base with all of you, I realized the other day that even though here in Indiana its winter(a weird one no snow, a lot of rain and temps pretty warm) in some of my fellow bloggers world its summer, so though its to late for all of you to plant your fall bulbs soon you'll be able to plant your spring bulbs. And even if you rent your home as long as you know you'll be there the following year I would still plant them but in more of a compact area, that way if you have to move you could, if you wanted, dig them up and take them with you. And for you that are enjoying summer now is the time to start thinking about what you want your gardens to look like this fall and if your going to add any plants that bloom in fall planting them now will give them time to get established before the cold hits. Also during this time when most of your hard work is done and your just keeping up with maintenance its a good time to look over your yard tools and make sure their all in order.
